How The Battle Between the U.S. and Venezuela Started

Venezuela and the U.S. have been in controversy for many years. Here are the main reasons towards this major step.

  • The U.S. government said that these actions were a part of a fight against drugs, terrorism, and corruption.
  • The Maduro and his wife are building a large criminal network using government support and securing criminals. Supplies illegal drugs such as cocaine into the U.S. and cooperates with drug suppliers like Mexico’s Sinaloa cartel and Colombia’s FARC.
  • The United States government increased its military presence around Venezuela, stopped the export of oil tankers, and attacked drug-smuggling ships to destroy Maduro’s government.
  • Some rumours say that Maduro has repeatedly stated that he sought peace, not war. Once, he danced in front of students, speaking peace over war and mimicking Trump’s fist-pumping action. Reports say Trump disliked it.

How Was The Operation Done

The military operation began in the early hours of January with bombs and simultaneous attacks across northern Venezuela. Hundreds of U.S. military aircraft and special forces participated. Strikes also caused explosions inside the country. The United States denies that any American soldiers died, while acknowledging that some were injured.

The Charges Maduro and His Wife Are Facing In The U.S.

Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, have been charged in U.S. federal court in New York. The charges range from drug trafficking to narco-terrorism, weapons offences and other serious crimes. The U.S. government has said that the charges are based on Maduro’s supposed direction of sending large amounts of cocaine to the United States and aligning himself with outlaw organizations. The charges carry the potential of very long prison sentences if he is convicted in the United States. Maduro and Flores have said they are innocent.

Who is Leading Venezuela Now?

After the capture of President Nicolas Maduro, Venezuela's leadership abruptly changed. On 5 January 2026, the Supreme Court named Vice President Delcy Rodríguez as temporary president. She was selected because she was next in line and considered loyal by the allies of Mr Maduro. Delcy Rodriguez is a lawyer and seasoned government official. She has held a number of top government posts and is a prominent figure in the ruling party. Her primary responsibility is to keep the government running during the crisis. Venezuela is supposed to have elections soon, but it remains unclear who the country’s next leader will be. This is the time supposed to be for stability.

What’s Next for Venezuela and the Region?

As per the experts, Venezuela now faces a critical turning point. The country needs to decide upon its future government through elections and diplomacy. Many countries are calling on the government to find a peaceful, legal solution that respects Venezuela’s power. There is concern that the crisis could cause more instability in Latin America. Humanitarian concerns remain, including for the millions of Venezuelans who continue to suffer under economic conditions. The freedom with which Venezuela rebuilds its political and economic systems will determine the future of the region.
