The Story Behind the IndiGo Flight - Cancellation Crisis

Story By - NextGen Gpost 2025-12-09 Travel Disruptions, IndiGo Crisis 137

Travel Disruptions, IndiGo Crisis
The first week of December 2025 observe a major crisis occurred at IndiGo, flights were being cancelled across the nation in large numbers. Nationwide, there were more than 1,000 cancellations on 5 December. Airports in big cities, including Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Chennai, were highly affected with hundreds of cancellations. By the first few days of December, the on-time performance of IndiGo had fallen to 8.5% only which meant nearly all its flights were delayed or cancelled. This wasn’t a one-day issue. The disturbances covered multiple days and affected thousands of travellers - some stood at airports, others were unable to attend weddings.

IndiGo Flight Latest Updates

  • Over 400 IndiGo flights were cancelled, with the majority from Delhi and Bengaluru. While IndiGo normally operates around 2,200 flights a day in the winter, DGCA has directed it to cut this by 5% to deal with disruptions.
  • IndiGo said it has so far refunded ₹827 crore, even as cancellations extend into the eighth day. They can claim refunds for flights cancelled till December 15, and almost two lakh passengers are being facilitated every day.
  • “The system is recovering and partially back up,” IndiGo said, adding that operations were returning to normal. The Airline, in addition also stated that it has reunited over 4,500 passenger delayed bags.

Reason Behind the IndiGo Flight Crisis

There are several causes that cause this big problem. Here are some of them:

  • New Pilot-Crew Rules (FDTL Guidelines)
The main reason was a rule change by the aviation controller DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation). These new Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) rules - that came fully into effect from November 2025 - require pilots and crew to have much longer rest periods, limit night-flying, and reduce how many hours they can fly in a day/week. These tighter rules would make it impossible for many crews to fly short-handed. IndiGo, which operates more than 2,200 flights a day, clearly did not add sufficient additional crew. Many flights had to be cancelled because of this shortcoming.

  • IndiGo’s “Lean Operation” Model Backfired
Maintaining a limited staff and using its aircraft to the fullest has always been IndiGo’s model in order to keep costs low. But this time, that limited staffing also meant there were no extra pilots or crew members to manage the new scheduling rules. So when FDTL kicked in, the airline had months of no changes. The IndiGo management has been blamed for this unpreparedness and failure to plan by pilot unions and experts.

Other Operational Challenges

  • Mechanical problems with planes or airport equipment.
  • Problems with cold weather, fog, particularly in the north of the country.
  • More airport queues (due to a number of flights being delayed/cancelled).

How does Flight Cancellation Affect People?

Thousands of travellers at airports were stuck after a flight was cancelled. A lot of people missed significant events - weddings, meetings, formal work, hospital visits - when flights were cancelled at the last minute. There were social media accounts of anger, frustration and the sort of desperation that is born of despair experienced by passengers.

How did IndiGo and the Controller React

  • IndiGo released a public apology and attributed the disruption to “misjudgment and planning gaps”.
  • The airline allowed passengers to refund their tickets and rebook for free (without a cancellation fee - but with a possible rescheduling fee) for those who had purchased a ticket in December.
  • IndiGo said it would assist passengers who were stranded in an airport - offering things like meals, lodging or accommodations.

Why This Information is Important for Travellers

  • If your flight is cancelled, you are entitled to a full refund or rebooking without penalty, according to IndiGo’s own policy.
  • It’s necessary to verify your flight status online (inside Indigo's official website) before you go to the airport, since many cancellations/changes took place at the last minute.
  • For future trips: Maybe try to build a change into your plans - don’t schedule flights so closely before important events.
For travellers, this crisis is a reminder: Be informed and be prepared for the unexpected changes.
