NextGen Gpost 2025-11-13 delhi air pollution, smog city 121
Delhi (the Capital of India) faces toxic pollution every year in winter. Recently, the AQI (Air Quality Index) in Delhi hit 428, which falls in the severe (critical) class. Nowadays, coughing is more frequent among people.
Air Pollution & AQI
Air pollution is the result when the mix of air includes a numerous of tiny particles of dust, smoke, and toxic chemicals. PM2.5 is the primary source of pollution in Delhi. Once these atoms reach the lungs, they can do a lot of harm to the health.
AQI (Air Quality Index) is a bit like a report card for air. It shows the level of air cleanliness or dirtiness:
- 0-50: Good (fresh air)
- 51-100: Moderate
- 101-200: Unhealthy for sensitive people
- 201-300: Poor
- 301-400: Very poor
- 401+: Severe (best to stay indoors!)
Wazirpur is currently the area with the highest AQI of roughly 400+. All the people in the city are face the same amount of pollution as if they were smoking 15 cigarettes a day.
Main Causes of Air Pollution in Delhi
Delhi's air gets polluted from various sources. It's not just one source. These are the top reasons:
- Cars and Trucks (Vehicular Emissions)
- Farm Burning (Stubble Burning)
- Factories and Power Plants
- Dust from Roads and Building Sites
- Geography Traps It All
How Delhi Air Pollution Hurts Your Health
Inhaling polluted air is a very harmful thing to your body. It affects your body quickly as well as slowly.
Short-Term Effects
- Coughing, sneezing, and a sore throat.
- Burning eyes and a runny nose.
- Headaches and tiredness.
- Trouble breathing, like asthma attacks.
Long-Term Effects
- Lung damage
- Heart problems
- Weak immune system
- Skin and eye issues
Impact on Environment and Wildlife
It's not only people who are affected. Animals also endure suffering. The release of toxic gases kills birds and insects, depending on the pure air. Plants do not flourish well. From the contaminants that fall in them, polluted rivers grow filthier. Delhi's green cover is dwindling, thus increasing the heat. This terrible cycle worsens the already bad pollution issue.
Latest Update on Delhi Air Pollution
- Morning Air Turns Toxic Even with No Traffic at Night
Delhi morning air is going to be very harmful, even with the night traffic being less. This is due to different weather patterns. Most of the time in winter, the cold air below keeps all the pollutants down while the warm air above acts like a lid, preventing their escape. Light winds and stubble burning contribute to it. This leads to smog accumulation, which makes mornings very polluted and thus dangerous to health. Specialists recommend that people not do any outdoor physical activity early in the morning in such cases.
- Thick Smog Chokes Anand Vihar, Daryaganj and More Areas with ‘Severe’ Pollution
Today, when Delhi people woke up, dense fog covered the city, which made for poor visibility. Bawana, Daryaganji, and Anand Vihar air quality is so bad, and AQI crossed 450, which indicates that the air became incredibly poisonous. In India Gate and Kartavya Path also a heavy smog, and they were invisible. People found it difficult to breathe, and those who were going out started putting on masks again because the pollution level had reached the stage of extreme risk.
- Delhi Schools Shift to Hybrid Mode Till Class 5 Amid Smog
As the pollution situation has deteriorated, schools in Delhi up to Class 5 have been instructed to conduct hybrid classes. The decision to switch to hybrid classes was taken after the enforcement of GRAP-3 regulations, as the air quality deteriorated to the "severe" level. The decision is intended to limit the exposure of children to toxic air. The administration is still keeping an eye on the condition and advising people to remain indoors if they can.
Shocking Incidents That Highlight the Crisis
Delhi has repeatedly experienced smog events that have severely impacted the normal lives of the people. Those include:
- 2017-18 Cricket Match Chaos: During the third Test match between India and Sri Lanka at Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi, a very unusual situation was witnessed as players were wearing masks on the field. The air quality was so bad that the umpires were very frequently checking the visibility for a few minutes. Even batsmen like Virat Kohli went on to say that it was like playing in the fog. The game went on as planned, but it was a very strong indication of how pollution not only limits people's way of life but also hampers the occurrence of sports, which people love to watch and play.
- Recent Protests: "I Can't Breathe" Movement: On November 10, several hundred people walked to India Gate - the most significant protest since the COVID time. Protesters carried signs bearing the words "Arrest Pollution, Not Us." Police detained 80 people briefly. The protesters are demanding permanent bans on old diesel vehicles and firecrackers throughout the year. These rare gatherings in the streets forced the leaders to take faster steps.
Can Artificial Rain Save Delhi?
One method governments resorted to was "cloud seeding" - they would scatter chemicals from the aircraft to make clouds that would then wash the smog with rain. In October 2025, Delhi conducted experiments together with experts from IIT Kanpur. They released silver iodide on the clouds above Burari.
Did the conclusion turn out favorably? Not. Flights existed on October 28 and 29, but no rain was noted. Scientists claimed the clouds were not appropriate because they were too arid. The pollution level could be halved if the operation is successful, but it requires perfect weather conditions and several attempts. Experts state that technology can support the solution, but the real solution is less emission from the source.
What's Stopping Real Fixes?
- Farmer Woes: Stubble burning is a way that farmers make money by doing it very fast and cheaply. However, the equipment is very costly. Punjab is assuring the backing of the farmers, yet the transition is still very slow.
- State Fights: Delhi accuses the neighbours of polluting the air; Punjab says that Delhi has too many vehicles. No one has completely agreed.
- Money and Power: Polluting companies pay their fines and continue polluting. The departments that enforce the law need more officers and modern equipment to be effective.
- Winter Trap: It looks like Mother Nature is not on our side either - there is no rain, the winds are very still, and as a result, the pollution is getting worse.
In its order dated November 2025, the Supreme Court directed that a report be submitted on the situation of stubble in Punjab and Haryana.
Government Steps to Fix
Plans the government uses to fight back. The chief one being GRAP (Graded Response Action Plan). Basically, stages are based on AQI.
GRAP Stage III is presently (for AQI 401-450):
- Ban Construction: No new building or road work that makes dust. Only necessary projects are allowed.
- Shut down Crushers and Mines: Stone crushers and mining will be stopped in NCR.
- Vehicle Rules: More buses, fewer private cars. Odd-even may be launched if the situation worsens more.
- Factory Checks: Industries cutting smoke. Power plants are switching to cleaner fuel.
- Dust Control: Water sprinklers on roads. Increase in green cover.
