April is here — and before you rush to your bank branch for that important transaction, you need to know this: banks across India will remain closed for up to 14 days this month.
Yes, 14 days. Between national holidays, regional festivals, weekends, and mandatory Saturday closures, April 2026 is one of the busiest months when it comes to bank shutdowns. Missing this list could mean a wasted trip to your branch — or worse, a delayed payment at a critical time.
Here is everything you need to know, broken down clearly so you can plan your banking without any last-minute stress.
Why Do Banks Close So Often in April?
Bank holidays in India are governed by the Reserve Bank of India and fall into three categories — national holidays observed across the entire country, state-specific or regional holidays that vary by city and festival, and weekend closures which include all Sundays and the second and fourth Saturdays of every month.
April is particularly packed because it sits right at the start of a new financial year, coincides with multiple religious and cultural festivals across India's diverse regions, and begins with a mandatory nationwide closure for year-end account closing.
The important thing to remember is that not every holiday applies to every state. A bank in Chennai might be open on a day when a bank in Kolkata is shut, and vice versa. This is why checking the state-wise list matters more than just knowing the national dates.
Complete List of Bank Holidays — April 2026
April 1 (Wednesday) — Annual Closing of Accounts — ALL INDIA
This is the one day that affects every single bank branch across India without exception. April 1 marks the annual closing of financial accounts, during which bank employees complete year-end accounting processes for financial year 2025-26. No branch services will be available anywhere in the country on this day. Plan accordingly — especially if you have any financial year-end transactions pending.

This means a very large portion of the country will have banks closed on this day.

What About Online Banking and UPI?
Good news — even when your bank branch is closed, digital services continue to work normally. UPI payments, NEFT transfers, IMPS, internet banking, and mobile banking apps will all function on bank holidays without any interruption.
However, there are some transactions that require branch intervention and will not be processed on holidays. These include cash deposits at branches, cheque clearances and new cheque submissions, demand drafts and banker's cheques, account opening and KYC updates, and loan disbursements that require physical documentation.
If any of these are time-sensitive, make sure you complete them on a working day well in advance.
Key Dates to Watch Out For
Two stretches in April deserve special attention for planning purposes.
The first is April 1-3 — three consecutive days of closures in most cities. April 1 shuts all branches nationwide. April 2 affects Lucknow and Kanpur. April 3 closes most city branches for Good Friday. If you are in a city where all three apply, you effectively have no branch access from April 1 to April 3.
The second is April 12-15 — another near-consecutive cluster. April 12 is Sunday, April 13 is Second Saturday, April 14 is Ambedkar Jayanti, and April 15 sees closures in multiple northeastern and southern states. In some cities, branches will be shut for four days straight.
Plan your banking work accordingly — especially if you need to make large cash transactions, submit cheques, or complete any documentation-heavy processes.
One Important Update — RBI Override on March 31
You may have seen news that the RBI cancelled the bank holiday on March 31, 2026, in several states including Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and others. This was done to ensure proper accounting of year-end government receipts and payments. Banks handling government transactions were directed to remain open on Mahavir Jayanti to complete financial year 2025-26 closings. This is separate from the April 1 closure, which remains mandatory for all banks.
