Maharashtra faced a shocking incident. Indian politician or Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar (Ajit Anantrao Pawar) died on 28 January 2026, when his private plane crashed while landing at Baramati airport. He was 66 years old, born on 22 July 1959. Ajit Pawar, popularly known as “Dada,” was travelling from Mumbai to Baramati to attend election meetings. The accident occurred about 8:45 am.
The aircraft was a Learjet 45. It was carrying five people: Ajit Pawar, Mumbai Police constable Vidip Jadhav (Personnel Security Officer), flight attendant Pinky Mali, Captain Sumit Kapoor (pilot) and Captain Shambhavi Pathak (co-pilot). While attempting to land, the plane went off the runway and caught fire. Unfortunately, no one survived because of the strong fire.
Nearby residents told of a shocking scene. They heard a loud noise and saw the plane in flames. When they tried to help, more explosions happened. The fire was so high that no one could go near the plane.
The news deeply shocked the entire state. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced three days of state mourning and declared a public holiday. He mentioned that Pawar was not just a leader, but also his close friend who supported him in tough times.
Pawar’s uncle, the senior leader Sharad Pawar, immediately flew to Baramati by helicopter. He said, “How did it happen?” He was emotional and surprised. He went to the hospital where his nephew’s body was taken.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi showed deep sadness over the loss. Ajit Pawar was a leader who stayed closely connected with the people, he said. The funeral will be held at 11 am on Thursday (January 29) at Vidya Pratishthan ground in Baramati, and the Prime Minister will attend it.
Ajit Pawar had a long political career of more than 30 years. He was first elected from Baramati in 1991 and won the seat seven times in a row. Pawar played a major role in Maharashtra politics. He was Deputy Chief Minister six times and managed several key departments. His political journey saw dramatic twists. In 2019, he briefly joined the BJP, and in 2023, the NCP split into two groups.
Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal, called for an extensive investigation into the crash. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge also supported this demand. The special team of the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has sent to investigate the real cause of the accident.
Pawar leaves behind his wife, Sunetra Pawar, a Rajya Sabha member, and two sons, Parth and Jay Pawar. Leaders from all political parties are paying tribute to him. Maharashtra has lost an experienced leader, and his absence will be painfully felt.
The national flag will fly at half-mast in Maharashtra for three days as a mark of respect. This is a small tribute to a leader whose entire life was dedicated to public service.
