If you have tried booking a Tatkal train ticket recently and hit a wall asking for Aadhaar verification, you are not alone — and you are not doing anything wrong. Indian Railways has made Aadhaar authentication mandatory for Tatkal bookings, and millions of passengers are still catching up with the change.
This guide will walk you through exactly what has changed under the IRCTC new ticket policy, why it was done, what benefits you actually get, and how to complete the process quickly so the next time you need a last-minute train ticket, nothing stands between you and your seat.
What Changed and When?
The Ministry of Railways rolled out Aadhaar-based authentication for Tatkal bookings in phases through 2025 and 2026. Here is the timeline:
From July 1, 2025, only passengers with Aadhaar-verified IRCTC accounts could book Tatkal tickets through the IRCTC website and mobile app. From July 15, 2025, Aadhaar-based OTP authentication became mandatory for all online Tatkal bookings — meaning you now need to enter a one-time password sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile number every time you book a Tatkal ticket.
The rules were extended to offline booking as well. At computerised Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters and through authorised agents, OTP authentication sent to the passenger's registered mobile number is now required for every Tatkal booking. Authorised agents were also restricted from booking Tatkal tickets during the first 30 minutes of the booking window — a move specifically designed to prevent bulk-buying during the critical opening period.
In early 2026, additional changes came into effect for Advance Reservation Period (ARP) tickets. From January 5, 2026, only Aadhaar-verified users can book on the first day of ARP from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. From January 12, 2026, that window extends until midnight. This means if your Aadhaar is not linked, you essentially lose priority access on the most competitive booking days.
Why Did Indian Railways Do This?
The honest answer is that the Tatkal system was being systematically gamed. Bots, unauthorised agents, and fake accounts were bulk-booking Tatkal seats the moment the window opened, leaving genuine travellers with no options or forcing them to pay inflated prices on secondary markets.
Aadhaar authentication addresses this at the root. Since each Aadhaar number is unique and tied to a verified individual, it becomes nearly impossible to create multiple fake accounts for bulk booking. The OTP requirement means that even if someone has access to a verified account, they need access to the registered mobile number as well.
According to IRCTC, Aadhaar-based authentication has already significantly reduced the creation of fake and unauthorised accounts on the platform — which in turn has improved the availability of genuine Tatkal seats for real passengers.
What Do You Actually Gain from Linking Aadhaar?
Beyond just being able to book Tatkal tickets, linking your Aadhaar to your IRCTC account comes with a set of tangible benefits worth knowing.
Your monthly booking limit goes from 12 tickets to 24 tickets per month. If you travel frequently or book for family members regularly, this alone is a significant upgrade.
You can add up to 12 Aadhaar-verified passengers to your IRCTC Master List, compared to 6 for non-verified accounts. And once passengers are added and verified, you do not need to manually enter their details every time — the system auto-fills from your list, saving precious seconds during those intense Tatkal booking windows.
You also get priority access on ARP opening days, which means you are ahead of non-verified users in the queue when the most popular seats become available.
How to Link Aadhaar to Your IRCTC Account — Step by Step
The process is straightforward and takes about 5 minutes if your Aadhaar-linked mobile number is active.
Step 1: Open the IRCTC website at www.irctc.co.in and log in with your username and password. Step 2: Click on the 'My Account' tab in the top menu and select 'Authenticate User.'
Step 3: Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number or Virtual ID. Make sure the name, date of birth, and gender on your IRCTC profile match your Aadhaar exactly — any mismatch will cause the verification to fail.
Step 4: Click on 'Verify Details and Receive OTP.' An OTP will be sent to your Aadhaar-registered mobile number.
Step 5: Enter the OTP, accept the consent form, and click Submit. A success message will confirm that your account has been authenticated.
Once your account is verified, you can add family members' Aadhaar numbers to your Master List by going to 'My Profile' and selecting 'Add/Modify Master List.' Enter the passenger's name, date of birth, Aadhaar number, and gender. Their status will initially show as 'Pending' and will update to 'Verified' once the system processes it — no separate OTP is required for this step.
What If Your Aadhaar-Linked Mobile Number Has Changed?
This is the most common problem passengers face. If you registered your Aadhaar with a mobile number you no longer use, you will not receive the OTP. In this case, you will need to update your mobile number in the Aadhaar system first — this can be done at any Aadhaar Seva Kendra or enrolled post office with biometric verification. Once updated, come back and complete the IRCTC linking.
A Few Important Points to Know
Using domestic LPG cylinders for commercial purposes is one kind of rule — misusing another person's IRCTC account for Tatkal bookings is another. Both are treated seriously under relevant law. IRCTC's system now makes this considerably harder, but it is worth being aware of the rules.
Hospitals and educational institutions that book train tickets for specific operational purposes operate under different provisions — but for the average passenger, the standard Aadhaar authentication process applies uniformly.
Not everyone has immediately embraced this change. A public interest litigation challenging the government's circular mandating Aadhaar-based authentication for Tatkal bookings was heard in court in early March 2026, with the bench issuing observations on the matter. The system remains in place while the legal process continues.
Final Thought
The shift to Aadhaar-based authentication for Tatkal booking is genuinely good news for honest travellers, even if the setup feels like extra work. It levels the playing field, reduces the bot problem, and gives verified passengers real advantages. If you have not linked your Aadhaar yet, doing it today takes less than 10 minutes — and the next time you need a last-minute ticket, you will be glad you did.
