Russian President Vladimir Putin landed in New Delhi on Thursday, 04 December 2025, evening, near the Palam Air Force Station (Palam Airport) for his first visit to the country since the start of the Ukraine war nearly 4 years ago. PM Narendra Modi received Putin at the airport himself, a departure from usual protocol that marked apparent warmth and trust between them. Russia’s Defence Minister, Andrei Belousov, also travelled with Putin.

  • Defence cooperation: Russia would like India to think of purchasing additional systems such as the S-400 and Su-57 fighters. They were discussing Russian missile systems, air defence systems and fighter jets.
  • Rising oil trade: India has received substantial Russian crude at discounted prices. India and Russia announce a new target of $100 billion in trade by 2030. Talks also started about the Free Trade Agreement with the Eurasian Economic Union.
