Story By - Jack Miller 2026-04-03 Quiz, General Knowledge 26

Quiz, General Knowledge
You live in one of the most geographically diverse countries on the planet. Snow-capped mountains in the north. Dense rainforests in the northeast. Scorching deserts in the west. Tropical coastlines in the south. India has it all — and yet most of us barely scratch the surface of what we actually know about the land we call home.

This quiz will change that. Ten carefully picked questions, four options each, all based on verified facts about India's geography. Some will feel easy. A few will surprise you. All of them are worth knowing.

Grab a pen, note your answers, and check the results at the bottom. No Google — that is cheating!

Answers + Explanations

Q1 — Answer: D) Rajasthan
Rajasthan covers approximately 3.42 lakh square kilometres — about 10.4% of India's total land area. It is the largest state by area. Madhya Pradesh, which many people guess, is actually the second largest. Fun fact: Rajasthan is slightly larger than Japan.

Q2 — Answer: C) India and Nepal
Kanchenjunga stands at 8,586 metres and is the third highest peak in the world. It sits on the border of Sikkim (India) and Nepal. Mount Everest — the world's highest peak — is often wrongly assumed to be in India. Everest is entirely in Nepal.

Q3 — Answer: B) Gangotri Glacier
The Ganga begins its journey at Gaumukh — meaning "cow's mouth" — at the snout of the Gangotri Glacier in Uttarakhand. From there it travels approximately 2,525 kilometres before emptying into the Bay of Bengal through the Sundarbans delta. The Gangotri Glacier itself is slowly retreating due to climate change, which is a serious long-term concern for the river's flow.

Q4 — Answer: D) 6 Countries
India shares land borders with six countries — Pakistan to the northwest, China and Nepal to the north, Bhutan to the northeast, and Bangladesh and Myanmar to the east. Many people answer seven because they include Sri Lanka, but India's boundary with Sri Lanka is a maritime (sea) border, not a land border.

Q5 — Answer: C) Tsangpo
The Brahmaputra goes by different names in different countries. It is called Tsangpo in Tibet, Brahmaputra in Assam, and Jamuna in Bangladesh. It is one of the few major rivers in the world that cuts directly through a mountain range — the Himalayas — rather than flowing around it, creating one of the world's deepest river gorges in the process.

Q6 — Answer: D) Sharavati River
Jog Falls in Karnataka is formed by the Sharavati River, which makes a sudden plunge of about 253 metres — creating four separate cascades known as Raja, Rani, Roarer, and Rocket. It is one of the most powerful waterfalls in Asia, especially during and just after the monsoon season. Many people guess Kaveri or Godavari, but neither of those rivers is responsible for Jog Falls.

Q7 — Answer: C) Sabarmati
The five rivers that gave Punjab its name are Ravi, Beas, Sutlej, Jhelum, and Indus. After the Partition of India in 1947, several of these rivers now flow partly through Pakistan. The Sabarmati is a completely different river — it flows through Gujarat and is best known as the river beside which Mahatma Gandhi established his Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad.

Q8 — Answer: C) Seven Northeastern States of India
The Seven Sisters are Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura, and Arunachal Pradesh. They are called sisters because of their shared cultural, ethnic, and geographical characteristics. Sikkim, which borders several of these states, is sometimes informally called their "brother." If you want to read more about how these states are shaping up politically, check our India State Elections 2026 guide — Assam is going to the polls this month.

Q9 — Answer: C) Godavari
The Godavari is officially called Dakshin Ganga — the Ganga of the South. It is the longest river in peninsular India at approximately 1,465 kilometres and holds deep religious significance across Maharashtra, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh. Kaveri is sometimes called the "Ganga of the South" in informal usage, but the recognised title of Dakshin Ganga belongs to the Godavari.

Q10 — Answer: B) 5 Hours 30 Minutes
India follows a single time zone — IST (UTC+5:30) — across the entire country. The reference meridian passes through Mirzapur in Uttar Pradesh. India deliberately chose not to split into two time zones despite the country's considerable east-west spread, in the interest of national unity. The unusual 30-minute offset (rather than a whole hour like most countries) makes IST one of the more distinctive time zones in the world.

Bonus Fact Before You Go

India's southernmost point is not Kanyakumari. That is a common misconception. The actual southernmost point of Indian territory is Indira Point, located on Great Nicobar Island in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It sits just about 150 kilometres from the coast of Indonesia. Kanyakumari is the southernmost tip of the Indian mainland — an important distinction.
